The IPL Extra818 with GEM–PL Technology
The IPL Extra818, is an advanced system based on Active’s GEM-PL technology that allows your Viso Technician to set treatments according to your skin colour, skin photosensitivity and treatment depth.
The Extra818 is the outcome of more than a decade of treatments and thousands of IPL devices operated worldwide. The IPL Extra818 treats a variety of skin issues that can not be treated with your basic treatments such as a HydraFacial. The Extra delivers precise and targeted treatments to specific issues such as pigmentation, vascular lesions, acne and more.
The delivery of concentrated light bypasses the epidermis and is penetrated deeper into the skin than your typical IPL type treatments. This creates visible results with less trauma to the skins surface than a regular IPL. This makes the GEM–PL Technology virtually painless and your number one choice in the world for any intense pulsed light-based treatment.

Our Goal is to deliver results with safe treatments
GEM-PL (Intense Pulsed Light-IPL) Photofacials are safe if performed by a trained Viso Technician.
However; like with any laser treatment, there are some risks and side effects to be aware of:
Common Risks and Side Effects:
- Redness and Swelling – Can occasionally happen and is temporary. Lasting from a few hours to a few days.
- Changes in Skin Color: There is a rare risk in clients with dark skin tones. We do not treat Skin Types 5 and 6 for safety reasons.
- Infection: Follow the Viso Post Care and use only products recommended by your Viso Technician only. Infection is not caused in the treatment rooms, it is caused by not following Post Care.
- Eye Injury: Mandatory safety eyewear must be used by patient and technician during treatments.
- Tattoos: We do not treat over tattoos. The light will cause damage to tattoos.

Who will benefit from receiving the IPL Extra818 (GEM-PL) Treatments?

What should I expect during my IPL Extra818 treatment?
Standard Treatment Protocol:
- Remove Make-Up
- Cleanse
- Eye Protection
- Cooling Gel
- Your customized IPL Extra818 GEM-PL procedure will take place
- During treatment communication about tolerance levels will be set
- Your technician will pause throughout the session to monitor skin’s reaction
- Gel will be removed and cold towels will be applied
- If ice packs are required you will be given them to use for a few minutes
- Finishing products will be applied
Can I schedule my first IPL Extra818 on the same days as my consultation?
- Yes.
You can schedule your first IPL Extra818 (GEM-PL) treatment if you are a safe candidate for the same days as your consultation. This is preferred.Please Note: If there are any possible concerns, you may be required to get a mandatory patch test. Patch Tests are $25+GST and this fee will go on file as a credit towards any service we offer at Viso. It does not need to be used towards an IPL if you choose to wait or have a different service. The fee is not reimbursed if you are not a candidate or choose to not get the service.
I have Botox and fillers can I have an IPL?
- Good News! Yes, you can still have an advanced IPL treatment when you have Botox or Fillers. However, there is a waiting time between treatments:Botox: 2 weeksFillers: 90 days is idealPLEASE NOTE: Though our waiting period is the standard 2 weeks for Botox and 90 days for fillers, we strongly advise you to contact your provider and follow their instructions.
Who will not benefit from the IPL Extra818 (GEM-PL) Treatments?
- Skin Types 5 and 6: There is too much risk with the very dark skin types and we can not treat them. We want clients to be safe and experience results.
- Pregnant: We do not treat anyone who is pregnant. If you become pregnant while you are going through treatments for the IPL Extra818 (GEM-PL) you must tell us immediately. Your treatments will stop. You will be able to resume your package after you are no longer pregnant. You can also change the remainder of your package to services that are safe for pregnancy.
- Cancer Treatments: We can not treat anyone who is receiving Cancer Treatments.

- Absolutely! The IPL Extra818 (GEM-PL) is safe and effective.When treatments with the Extra818 Gem-PL is performed by a trained Viso professional, IPL treatments are very safe. IPL treatments have been used for decades and have a proven track record of being successful and safe. The IPL Extra818 is a newer and more advanced management of light energy and this makes IPL treatments at Viso Medi Spa safer than any other system.The IPL Extra818 utilizes the GEM Technology which bypasses the epidermis and keeps your skin safe while delivering precise and virtually painless treatments.At Viso Medi Spa, we take your safety very serious. All our technicians are all certified and experienced. Your Viso Technician will communicate with you throughout your treatment making sure you are comfortable and will answer any questions you have.Our goal for our clients is safety and results.To make your experience not only enjoyable, but also successful, we encourage great communication, honesty, and any feedback our clients have.
Does the IPL Extra818 (GEM-PL) hurt?
No. The GEM-PL treatments are comfortable and not painful. The sessions are virtually painless. Treatments will be comfortable in most all areas. There will be a few spots such as around the corners of you nose that are snappy. But for the most part clients say “OH! That’s not bad at all!”
Are you someone that should not have GEM IPL treatments?

– Open wounds, rashes of any kind or herpes outbreaks in the treatment area
– Tattoos (We can not provide IPL treatments over the tattoo, we must work around the tattoos)

Advanced IPL Aftercare Protocol
- Following Viso’s aftercare protocol for GEM-PL or IPL Photofacials is important because it protects your skin, maximizes results and reduces the chance of any complications such as an infection.
- Use gentle cleanser and moisturizer for 2 days post treatment
- If your face or treatment area feels hot, use cold pack or cold towel
- Avoid sun exposure when possible and use minimum 40 spf diligently
- Use products recommended by your Viso Technician
- Make sure to always have clean make up brushes and pillow cases
- Follow any specific skincare instructions from your provider
- Keep skin cool. Temperatures matter. Do not run hot water on your face
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day regularly
- No hot tubs, swimming pools and depending how you feel rigorous exercise for 24-48 hours
- Always be gentle on your skin
